About Jane
Jane is a printmaker, living in Bristol UK and printing under the name of GradyPrints.
The name GradyPrints is in homage to her great-grandmother Louise O’Grady from Bristol, who in the 1880s lived in the street exactly where Jane’s studio is now.
Jane began printmaking in 2002 in London, working in the traditional etching technique of copper and steel, and exhibiting in various group shows before moving back home to Bristol in 2010. For a while, life got in the way of being able to spendt ime printmaking and it was in 2022 when she moved into BV Studios that she started printing again.
Jane uses a mix of traditional printing techniques, primarily collagraph and monoprint, often drawing into the printed image with a variety of mediums.
She creates colourful, semi-abstract hand-made prints, inspired by what she sees, reads and hears. These sources of inspiration often result in several different versions (monoprints) of the same thought process, as illustrated by “Floating on a Rock in Space” and “Sunlight Leaking Through Trees” editions.
Monoprinting is a direct way of working on an inked plate and allows for spontaneous results, combining printmaking with painting and drawing. The plate can go through the press several times, building up layers of pattern and colour. With the addition of Chine Collé – thinner Japanese Washi papers - exciting effects are created adding to the complexity of the print.
Jane also produces Variable Editions to a maximum of 5 per edition. Variable Edition printing is defined as a limited series of handmade prints, where each individual piece features intentional, unique differences, while still sharing the same core imagery. All artwork is signed and numbered.
